What a Weaker Jobs Report Could Mean for Mortgage Rates

This week's jobs report changed the rate conversation.

July payrolls fell by 23,000 instead of rising by the 80,000 expected, and prior months were revised sharply lower. Even the drop in unemployment came largely because fewer people were participating in the labor force.

For homebuyers, that matters because a weaker labor market reduces some of the pressure for the Fed to raise its benchmark rate, which can improve the outlook for mortgage rates. Friday's report helped, but other market pressures are still in play, so rates can move quickly.

What should you do with that? Know your numbers now. Keep your pre-approval current, confirm the payment range that works for you, and be ready if a better rate window opens.

If buying is on your radar, reach out and we'll help you review your numbers and map out your next step.
